Old Wives’ Tales for Predicting a Baby’s Gender

These folktales and stories passed down by generations are fun ways to distract yourself while you wait. Read on for some unscientific but entertaining ways to predict whether you’re having a girl or boy! Take this Gender Predictor Quiz.

Boy or Girl Early Signs

1. Fetal Heart Rate

If the BPM (beats per minute) is above 140, you are having a girl. If it is lower than 140 then you are having a boy.

2. Carrying High or Low

Take a look at your baby bump and check its position. If you are carrying high, it is a girl. If you are carrying low, it is a boy.

Your bump’s position can be affected by 2 main factors:
1. Your baby’s position in your tummy
2. Your body shape

3. Food Cravings

If you are into sour and sweet foods, you are expecting a girl. If you’re craving for bitter, salty and meats then you are expecting a boy.

It is said that women carrying a boy ate 10% more foods in general.

4. Pregnancy Glow

One of the most heard cliche is “Baby girls steal their mother’s beauty.”
So the acne, dull hair and dry skin are the consequences of your stolen beauty.

If you have the pregnancy glow you are having a boy. If not then you are having a girl.

5. Linea Nigra

Linea Nigra is the vertical dark line that develops on your belly during pregnancy.

If it is long and continuous until above your belly button, you are having a boy, and if it ends in just below your belly, then you are having a girl.

6. Asking A Child Below 3

It is said that children have strong intuitions on many things. Why not give it a shot and ask, particularly a little boy. If he shows interest in your pregnant belly, you are having a girl. If not, it is a boy.

7. Morning Sickness

Excessive nausea and morning headaches or sickness in general could be a sign that you are having a girl. It is said that mamas who carry a boy tend to have an easier pregnancy.

8. Mood Swings

Your hormones may be crazy now and that may affect your mood but based on the old wives’ tales they can also predict your baby’s gender too.

If you are a chill mom-to-be then you are having a boy. If you are a moody pregnant mom, you are having a girl.

9. Daddy’s Weight Gain

This may sound too far but your partner may be doing a sympathy body change with you.

They say that if your partner has gain weight, you are having a girl. And if there’s no changes, then you are having a boy.

10. Feet Changes

Feel your foot now and check. If its colder than usual, you are having a boy. If they’re warm or normal, you are having a girl.

It’s a proven theory in my opinion: The foot changes in terms of foot size after pregnancy. They said that a boy adds a half size to mom’s foot while a girl keeps you in your current shoe size.

11. Ring Gender Test

Your wedding ring dangling on a hair or string and hang over your pregnant belly.
If it swings in a circle, you are having a girl. If it goes back and forth in a straight line, you are having boy.

12. Baking Soda Reaction

2 Tablespoons of baking soda and add in your urine.
If the mixture fizzes up like soda, expect a boy. If there’s no reaction, expect a girl.

This can be tricky as your urine can be affected by many factors such as your hormones, diet and pH level.

13. Chinese Baby Calendar

Used by the Qing dynasty to help the imperial family create more heirs. Based on lunar calendar, the mother’s age and month of conception is considered here.

I tested the Chinese Gender Prediction Chart and it was correct for me. I have a baby boy!

14. Ultrasound (Congenital Anomaly Scan)

My Congenital Anomaly Scan Experience

Backed up by Science and Technology, this is one of the best tool that can predict your baby’s gender.

At around 18 to 22 weeks of pregnancy, The Congenital Anomaly Scan (CAS) is meant to check the development of fetal organs and body parts and can detect certain congenital defects. In most cases, you can learn the sex of the fetus.

Most people call this also as the “gender reveal” ultrasound, But of course, every parent is different. Some may want to wait on labor day to know their baby’s gender. This is totally depending on your decision.

15. Mother’s Intuition

Do not look and go any further, feel within your own body and listen to your intuition. You may have a guess, assumption or your heart surely knows what the baby is. Is she your mini-me? or are you going to be a boy mom? A woman’s intuition is always right they say…

You may have done all these but got a mixed result. But then just like with math, try to get the average and lead on with that. I strongly advise to wait for the Ultrasound and your doctor’s confirmation of the sex prior to buying those blue or pink cute little things.

While these methods may add a sprinkle of excitement during the waiting period, the truth is, there’s no foolproof way to predict your baby’s gender with certainty until you meet them. Embrace the mystery, enjoy the journey, and focus on the miraculous process of growing a tiny human inside you.

Before I end this post, Let me acknowledge a thing that many mothers experience but is too ashamed to admit. Afraid of what others will say and how people are going to react if they knew. Hence, they keep it to themselves and keep quiet.

Baby Gender Disappointment

This is a temporary state of mind. A Mother’s Love go beyond the gender, the physical appearance and so much more. It overlook everything bad and see all the hope and positive in their baby.

  1. I love sweets mommy even when preggy but it turned out all of my kids are boys.. I’m a bit opposite for the old wives tales and superstitions..I’m Moody too but it’s a boy ..all my gender predictions are wrong mommy..anyway,whatever God has given me I am thankful of it ..

  2. For me the myth, which I didn’t see here, that was actually correct for me had to do with dreaming. I have read that many people will have vivid dreams that they are having a boy and end up finding out its a girl or vice versa. That is exactly what happened with me. I was having vivid dreams almost every night and I just found out that I am having the opposite gender of what I was dreaming about!

  3. These are so much fun! I did several of these before my son was born and I continued to think I was having a girl. The chart was dead on though, so crazy!!

  4. These are interesting ideas! My pregnancies were opposite where most of these are concerned. I am going to refer back to this with my next pregnancy!!

  5. Oddly enough mine were almost all the opposite of what the old wives tell said 😂 the only thing I go by is my intuition, which is pretty accurate!

  6. Love this. The ONLY one correct for me was the Chinese calendar. Lol every thing else made me think I was having a girl… nope.

  7. I craved sweet foods, the heart rate was high, I had morning sickness and was moody. All signs pointing to a girl and they were right. I didn’t not have the acne or hair falling out until after pregnancy. Another old wives tale I’ve heard is that if you have dreams about your baby, you will be having the opposite gender. I drempt about having a boy twice and ended up with a girl.

  8. I wanted a boy. The ring test and urine test said boy. Ultrasound said girl. Also, the linea nigra thing went all the way down. Lol my girl is beautiful!

  9. These are super fun. I was SO SURE on the genders of my #3 and #4 that when I found them out (I was wrong on both) that it took a long time to come around to accepting it! ha!

  10. I can agree with some of these but I wish I knew about the baking soda. I’m on the hunt for a pregnant woman to try it out:) Thanks for the post

  11. It’s always fun during pregnancy to see which of these is right. So many great ones on here!

  12. Everyone always told me because I had the WORST heartburn that I was having girls with a full head of hair. QUITE the contrary – I ended up with two bald little boys! Hahaha love this!

  13. That’s neat your date of conception, my daughter was born on that day this year 🙂 Unfortunately, none of these were great indicators of gender for me. In fact, all signs pointed to me having a boy in consideration of the myths out there. Like food cravings. And I didn’t have acne, I had the glow. For both my girls, each pregnancy was so different. I hope people do find success with these, though! I might’ve just been odd ball out! 😂
